Working effortlessly
Since I’ve been spending a lot of time jazzing up my laptop, I’ve also got a new usb flash drive for any additional work that I need to do. The best part of having a laptop is the flexibility that comes with it, and since my work is also one that requires working on and off, regardless of where I am, it’s the perfect way for me to work. It has really changed the way I think of work and the way I take on assignments, and is probably responsible for making me more efficient since I have to work from different places at different times. Hoping I will be able to continue doing so in the future as well.

Wal-Mart has withdrawn its online download service within a year of it going live. The company reportedly canceled the service once Hewlett Packard stopped powering the technology behind it, according to Amy Colella, a spokeswoman for Wal-Mart. The company is reportedly looking for another company to provide the technology now. Wal-Mart declined to specify how many downloads had been sold on its site. The company was the first major retail company to offer download after partnering with all of the big movie studios and TV networks.

Sphere: Related ContentThe must have shopping bags of the season
It’s not just about who has the hottest clothes this season, but also about who has the hottest shopping bag! The designers at Saks Fifth Avenue wanted to create “a piece of modern art” and so hired a famous graphic artist to make their shopping bag. Bergdorf Goodman’s selection process took over nine months, and Lord & Taylor selected their bag from one of five prototypes and even went to Korea to check on its manufacture.
While this holiday season might not have the ‘it’ item to have as yet, shopping bags could be the reason for some consumers to decide where to shop. These bags are used for several months, so retailers are going all out in having a one-of-a-kind shopping bag. Consumers carrying store shopping bags are after all, walking advertisements for the store for several months for purposes as varied as carrying lunch to the office and laundry to the cleaners.
These shopping bags are a world apart from the thin plastic shopping bags, and come in an entire range of materials and handles. The heavier and sleeker the material, the better the bag. Once the territory of only the luxury brands, luxe shopping bags are now trickling down to mass market brands. The “reusability” of these shopping bags is what has created this change in the minds of marketers.
Chains are scrambling to move up the bag hierarchy. A year ago, employees at Lord & Taylor decided that their bags had become a liability. “It was the thinnest, most inexpensively constructed bag you could offer — a true throwaway bag,” said the chief executive, Jane Elfers.
So the retailer asked David Lipman, a marketing executive, to help design a new bag. Over six months, Mr. Lipman and his staff spared no expense. They eventually settled on a rich, white canvaslike paper — Mr. Lipman would disclose no further details — and thick, synthetic handles.

I downloaded Veoh and Joost this morning and am testing them out, trying to get to see some interesting videos and shows. So far, Veoh.com is by far the more user friendly of the two, in fact I can even see any video on Joost since it says I do not have a required driver installed, or some such thing. I downloaded and installed the VeohTV as well, which is like TiVo for the internet and lets you record a program and watch it at your convenience. I’m yet to use it, but it seems like a fun program to have for sure.

This holiday season, all things technology seem to be doing rather well, whether they are micro sd chips or iPods or external hard drives and so on. Technology is being adapted by a large number of new customers and this is leading to its wider usage. Interestingly, it is not the normal profile of a technology user that is creating more sales, but rather a different type of user, both older and younger. It will be intriguing to see how it affects the industry in the coming year.

According to new research by Satchi & Satchi, consumer electronic manufacturers and retailers are missing out on a major segment of the market by not targeting women consumers. The numbers in 2007 are likely to add up to GBP600 million in lost sales by not focusing on women consumers. With close to 35% of female internet consumers likely to increase their spending on electronics if marketers and retailers would focus on their approach to women and even offer guidance at both the in-store and online formats. Half the women surveyed said that they leave stores and exit websites without purchasing anything when they are unable to find what they want, which is a huge opportunity for retailers.
Close to a third of women don’t feel confident to ask questions in stores and feel that technology advertising is not focused on them or is even relevant to them. An interesting find for male marketers, but a very basic one for women, is the revelation that women customers do not look for feminine colors when purchasing electronic items and instead feel patronized when these are offered.
Belinda Parmar, a planning director at Saatchi & Saatchi, and author of the report, said that 43 per cent of women go shopping for consumer electronics without a specific brand or product in mind. “There is a real opportunity here for brands and retailers in the consumer electronics sector to target women,” said Parmar.

Planning an event is not an easy task when it is at a different location than one’s office. We found that out first hand, when we planned to combine an internal company event with a pleasure trip to a nearby resort. The pleasure part was all fine, but the work part suffered since we did not have the right equipment to set up the event properly. Thankfully, the next time we planned such an event, we got all our computer and technology equipment from a company that did just that and were the experts in setting it all up. A company like ComputerRentals.com takes care of not only all the computer equipment you need but also other items like plasma rentals, a 5000 lumen projector rental and much more. There are also touchscreen LCD monitor rentals available, which is the one item that we were not able to find anywhere else. Their nationwide delivery option makes it easy to plan an event, whether it is a trade show or a seminar, where ever you want.
