Large retail Vs mom & pop retail
The tussle between large and small retailers is continuing and will always continue. Rather than competing on the same level, as in price, these retailers need to compete on different criteria. While it is possible for larger retailers to buy and get charge lower prices, that is not an option for most small retailers. So if a small retailer tries to compete only on price, then it is going to be a failure.
Small retailers have a lot of advantages, but are not using them to their full potential. In our immediate area, even though we have several organized format large retailers, 3 supermarkets and a hypermarket, the home delivery system is something that only small mom & pop retailers are able to handle. As hard as they try, larger retailers are just not able to deliver products to consumers as quickly as these stores.
Small retailers also have the upper hand when it comes to known the local preferences. Since they have been serving the same consumers they are aware of what works and what doesn’t and also offer a variety of locally made products that are usually not available at large stores. It’s things like these that they need to capitalize on to be able to compete effectively with organized retailers.
